RESEARCH & QUESTIONS

The questions below are based were put to a random selection of comic fans, ages 18 to 40.

Q: What is Comic Book Artist?

CBA is generally viewed as a thorough, interview-based comics magazine. Many of those polled believed CBA to be a “retro” book, similar to The Jack Kirby Collector, though this is not the case. While CBA does profile distinct movements and periods in comics history as well as traditional artists, it has also interviewed such modern creators as Frank Cho and Alex Ross.

Q: Who is the audience for Comic Book Artist?

A question more suited to retailers, we made a few calls to comic shops and spoke to the owners. They universally agreed that CBA skews almost exclusively to an older, male audience, ranging from college students to long-time fans in their late 40s and 50s. On the whole, customers purchasing CBA were described as devout fans, “real comics aficionados.” They added that younger comic fans tend to shy away from CBA, in favor of slicker and less thorough comic magazines.

Q: What is the look of Comic Book Artist?

The brightly colored CBA masthead (an homage to the classic Action Comics logo) proudly proclaims itself a comics magazine. The masthead is usually integrated into the cover art, with foreground objects or figures sometimes obscuring portions of the letterforms – a technique common in magazine design.
